  • Users get the ability to upload data to a centralized data bucket around the world.
  • Transferred data ranges anywhere between GB to TB.Such data can be transferred on a regular basis across continents.
  • When data is uploaded to S3, all of the available bandwidth present over the Internet is not utilized.Hence, Transfer Acceleration comes to play.
Requirements to use Transfer Acceleration
  • Transfer acceleration is supported on virtual types of requests only.
  • The S3 bucket’s name used for transfer acceleration should go with DNS rules and should not contain periods (‘.’).
  • Transfer acceleration enabled on a bucket takes about twenty minutes to reflect the speed during data transfer.
  • The endpoint name or the dual stack endpoint name is used to access the bucket.This is enabled for normal transfer acceleration or over IPV6 respectively.
  • The transfer acceleration on a bucket can be set by the owner of the bucket only. The bucket owner can grant permissions to other users so that they get the ability to grant permission to enable transfer acceleration on a S3 bucket.

Using Transfer Acceleration on a bucket may include the following reasons:

  • Your customers may want to upload to a centralized bucket from all around the world.
  • You can transfer GB to TB of data on a regular basis across continents.
  • As you can’t use all of your available bandwidth over the internet when uploading to Amazon S3, this comes to play.
GET & PUT Operation

The GET operation is implemented to return the transfer acceleration state of an S3 bucket. To implement this, the user needs the necessary permissions.Also, the transfer acceleration for that bucket has to be enabled, otherwise, no state is returned.

The PUT operation can be applied to set the accelerated configuration for an existing S3 bucket. The permission needed to perform this operation is enabled by default for the user. The owner can grant this permission for the bucket to other users as well.

The transfer acceleration state of a bucket can be enabled to be one of these two values:

  • Enabled: Enables data transfer with higher speeds to the bucket since transfer acceleration would have been enabled.
  • Suspended: Disables the transfer acceleration of data to S3 bucket.
S3 Transfers Acceleration
  • S3 Transfer Acceleration uses the CloudFront Edge Network to fast-track uploads to S3.
  • Instead of uploading the file directly to S3 bucket, the user gets a distinct URL. This URL uploads the data to the nearest edge location which in turn transfers the file to S3 bucket. The URL would look something like:  acloudguru.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com
